You should have received notice of any cancellation of your insurance. If the company did not cancel it properly and notify you, it may still be on the hook for coverage. Make the company prove what steps it took to properly cancel. If coverage is indeed cancelled, and you believe the loss was not your fault or that the damages are being exaggerated, you can still personally defend any action in court. Once the other party making the claim (or his/her insurance) discovers you have no coverage, unless you have substantial assets, the claimant will likely proceed against the coverage often provided by his/her own policy.
